From Ritual Worship to Ecological Leadership: Constructing Environmentally Responsive Educational Leaders through the Practice of Ramadan Fasting

This study is motivated by the Ramadan paradox: the practice of self-restraint is often accompanied by increased waste and excessive consumption. Previous studies on Green Ramadan have primarily focused on technical aspects of waste management and individual behaviour but have not yet addressed educational leadership. The study aims to explore how the process of constructing environmentally responsive educational leaders is shaped through Ramadan practices at the Jami’ Al Baitul Amien Mosque Foundation in Jember. This is a qualitative case study employing a descriptive-analytical approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and analysed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. Key findings reveal three forms of ecological leadership: spiritual exemplarity, participatory leadership, and educational innovation—reinforced by collective memory, ecological pressures, and structural support. Recommendations include developing leadership theories grounded in local wisdom, conducting longitudinal ethnographic research, and implementing an “Eco-Friendly Mosque” policy by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
